FAQ’s
What should I expect during my first visit?
Your initial consultation will last up to 30 minutes and includes a detailed assessment of your current issues, medical history, lifestyle, and dietary habits. The process also involves inspecting your tongue and taking your pulse as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis. All consultations are confidential, and treatments are customized to your needs. Needles are typically left in for about 20 to 30 minutes, in some cases longer. Another techniques like cupping, Tui Na massage, electro-acupuncture, moxibustion/heat lamp, or Bian-stone massage may be incorporated as appropriate.
What does it mean when acupuncture hurts?
If a needle contacts a small nerve, muscle, or blood vessel, you might feel brief pain or a stronger sensation. A single, momentary sensation is usually not a cause for concern. However, points on the extremities can lead to stronger reactions, such as dull aches or tingling.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of treatments varies based on the condition, its severity, and your overall health and age. Most patients begin to notice improvements after three to five sessions, though some may feel significant relief after just one. A typical treatment plan for a single complaint involves one or two sessions per week, usually totalling 6 to 8 treatments.
Are the treatments safe?
Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a qualified, certified practitioner using sterile needles. Common side effects include soreness, minor bleeding, or bruising at the insertion sites. The use of single-use, disposable needles minimizes the risk of infection.
Why not brush my tongue before acupuncture?
Avoid brushing your tongue before your appointment. The appearance of your tongue—its shape, colour, quality, and coating—provides valuable diagnostic information. Eating colourful foods (turmeric, chocolate, beetroot and others) or candy can also affect the assessment, so it’s best to keep your tongue as natural as possible.
Why do acupuncturists check your wrist?
In addition to asking questions, acupuncturists often take your pulse at multiple points on your wrist. They also assess the appearance of your tongue and may observe your skin colour, texture, posture, and other physical characteristics for insights into your health.
Do you accept health insurance?
Please check with your insurance provider to see if acupuncture is covered under your plan, as coverage can vary.
What should I avoid before acupuncture?
On the day of your session, avoid certain foods, especially:
• Coffee
• Alcohol
• Recreational drugs
Additionally, ensure you provide any relevant medical information to your practitioner.
Who should not get acupuncture?
If you have a pacemaker, are at risk for infections, have chronic skin issues, are pregnant, or have breast or other implants, inform your provider, as acupuncture may pose risks under these conditions. Always communicate any health concerns before treatment.
What should I wear?
When preparing for a therapeutic treatment, consider the following clothing tips:
1. Comfort is Key: Opt for loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. This helps you relax during your session.
2. Breathable Fabrics: Choose natural materials like cotton or linen, which are breathable and help regulate body temperature.
3. Accessibility: Wear clothing that provides easy access to the areas being treated. For example, if you’re having a massage on your back, a top that can be easily lifted or removed is helpful.
4. Minimal Accessories: Avoid wearing bulky jewellery or accessories that might get in the way during treatment.
By following these recommendations, you can ensure a more comfortable and effective treatment experience.
What to do after my treatment?
Post-Treatment Self-Care Tips
• Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins released during the treatment and to stay hydrated.
• Rest: Allow your body to relax and recuperate. Avoid strenuous activities or heavy exercise for at least the rest of the day.
• Gentle Movement: Light stretching or gentle walks can be beneficial, but avoid anything too vigorous.
• Eat Light: Opt for light meals, such as fruits and vegetables, following your treatment. Avoid heavy or rich foods immediately afterward and late in the evening, as they can delay your body’s self-healing processes.
• Monitor Symptoms: It’s normal to feel some tiredness or soreness after treatment. However, if you experience severe pain or discomfort, consult your practitioner.
• Warmth and Comfort: If you feel cold or fatigued, use a warm blanket or take a warm bath to help soothe your muscles.
• Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine: Refrain from alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants for at least 24 hours to allow your body to fully benefit from the treatment.
• Follow Practitioner’s Advice: Adhere to any specific recommendations or self-care plans provided by your acupuncturist.
By following these tips, you can enhance the benefits of your acupuncture treatment and support your healing process.
What are the key Features of Tui Na?
• Holistic Approach: Tui Na addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health, aiming to
restore harmony within the body.
• Techniques: It employs a range of techniques, including kneading, pressing, rolling, and stretching,
applied to specific acupressure points and meridians, the rivers of energy.
• Pain Relief: Tui Na is effective for managing pain, reducing muscle tension, and improving
flexibility and circulation.
What are the benefits of Acupressure?
• Self-Care: It can be easily practiced at home, empowering individuals to manage their own health
and well-being.
• Stress Reduction: Acupressure promotes relaxation and helps alleviate stress and anxiety.
• Wide Range of Applications: It can support various conditions, including headaches, digestive
issues, and fatigue.
What Are the Benefits of Cupping Therapy?
• Increased Hydration: It enhances hydration by promoting better blood circulation to the treated
tissues.
• Improved Blood Flow: Cupping increases localised blood flow, aiding in the delivery of oxygen
and nutrients to the area.
• Detoxification: The therapy helps drain excess fluid and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways.
These benefits make cupping effective for a variety of conditions, such as:
• Chronic muscle pain, tightness, and stiffness
• Reduced mobility
• Coldness in the extremities
• Headaches
• Anxiety
• Cellulite
• Fibromyalgia
• Additionally, cupping can assist with respiratory issues related to the common cold
Is Cupping Therapy Suitable for Me?
Cupping treatments are generally suitable for most patients; however, they may not be appropriate for individuals who are physically weak or who have specific conditions, including:
• Anaemia
• A pacemaker
• An infection
• Blood clotting disorders or haemophilia
• Cardiovascular disease
• High temperature
• High cholesterol
• Oedema or inflamed, irritated, or sensitive skin
• Organ failure
• Seizures
• Pregnancy (caution should be taken, particularly avoiding cupping on the lower back and abdomen)
Are There Any Side Effects of Cupping Treatment?
When performed by a licensed practitioner, cupping should not be painful. However, it may lead to temporary bruising (known as ecchymosis), swelling, or soreness, depending on the individual and the extent of the treatment. The marks typically fade within several days to a week. Some individuals have reported side effects, including:
• Light-headedness or dizziness
• Flu-like symptoms, such as nausea and body aches
While the risks associated with cupping are minimal, it’s important to note that cupping can leave hickey- like bruises on the skin and may exacerbate conditions like eczema or psoriasis. There is also a small risk of skin infection, particularly with wet cupping. If you experience any concerning symptoms after treatment, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional.
What do different colour cupping marks mean?
The different colours of cupping marks indicate the levels of Qi and blood stagnation, dampness accumulation, and toxin congestion in the treated area. Darker marks, such as black, deep blue, or purple, suggest a more pronounced presence of blood or Qi stagnation. This typically indicates that an illness or injury has been lingering in that area for an extended period, and the body has not yet fully resolved the stagnation. Since cupping can leave temporary marks resembling bruises, we recommend scheduling your cupping treatment at least two weeks before any sun holidays or formal events where the treated area (such as the shoulders) will be visible.
What are the key benefits of Heat lamp/Moxa
• Improved Circulation: The warmth from the heat lamp increases blood flow to the treated area,
facilitating healing.
• Muscle Relaxation: Heat helps to relax tight muscles and alleviate discomfort.
• Enhanced Healing: Moxibustion is known to enhance the effectiveness of acupuncture and promote
overall healing.
• Pain Relief: It can be particularly effective for treating conditions like arthritis, back pain, and
menstrual cramps.
• Boosted Immune Function: Moxa is believed to strengthen the immune system and improve
general vitality.
What are three stages of wound healing?
• Stage 1 (Acute/Inflammatory Phase):
Lasting 1-7 days post-injury, this stage is marked by swelling, bruising, inflammation, and/or pain.
Immediate focus is on reducing these symptoms with anti-inflammatory herbs. Topical featuring
menthol and ginger can provide quick relief.
• Stage 2 (Subacute/Proliferative Phase):
Beginning within a week and lasting up to 3 weeks, this phase sees a reduction in swelling and
inflammation, though stiffness and soreness may increase. As symptoms fluctuate, herbs that
promote circulation and healing, such as angelica and frankincense, become vital to support
recovery.
• Stage 3 (Remodelling/Chronic Phase): Starting around 3-4 weeks post-injury, this stage features diminished swelling but increased stiffness
and soreness, often leading to restricted motion. Healing for ligaments and tendons, due to their
limited blood supply, can take 6-8 weeks or longer to heal completely. This is also the stage where
injuries can linger and become chronic. To support long-term recovery and rehabilitation, topical that
nourish and strengthen tissues, including turmeric and myrrh, are essential to enhance flexibility and
reduce stiffness.
What are the benefits of Chinese Herbal Medicine?
• Personalised Treatment: Formulations are customised based on individual diagnoses and health
conditions.
• Complementary Therapy: Chinese herbs can be used alongside other TCM practices, such as
acupuncture, cupping or moxibustion to enhance overall effectiveness.
• Natural Ingredients: Herbal remedies often have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical
medications.
What are the benefits of Electro-Acupuncture?
• Pain Relief: Effective for managing chronic pain, including back pain, arthritis, and muscle
stiffness.
• Improved Circulation: Stimulates blood flow, promoting healing and reducing inflammation in
treated areas.
• Stress Reduction: Helps alleviate anxiety and stress by balancing energy and calming the nervous
system.
• Enhanced Muscle Relaxation: Useful for easing muscle tension and spasms, promoting relaxation.
• Faster Treatment: The electrical stimulation allows for quicker energy flow, often reducing the
length of treatment sessions.
• Broad Coverage: Can address larger areas of the body compared to traditional acupuncture, making
it ideal for widespread pain or conditions.
What are the benefits of sonic acupuncture?
• Muscle Healing: The vibrations from a 128 Hz tuning fork can stimulate blood flow and promote
muscle relaxation, aiding recovery from strains or injuries.
• Pain Reduction: Many practitioners report that this sound frequency can alleviate pain by reducing
tension and facilitating the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.
• Physical Therapy: Some physical therapists incorporate tuning forks into their treatments to
enhance muscle re-education and improve proprioception (awareness of body position).
• Stress Reduction: The calming effects of this frequency can help reduce overall stress, contributing
to better muscle recovery and pain management.
• Nitric Oxide Release: The vibrations may promote the release of nitric oxide, which helps relax
blood vessels, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation, aiding recovery.
• Bone Conduction: Tuning forks can transmit vibrations through bones, stimulating sensory
receptors and enhancing communication between the body and brain, potentially benefiting bone
health.
• Point Amplification: This refers to the tuning fork's ability to amplify specific points on the body,
such as acupressure or trigger points, promoting localized healing and relaxation.
